DISH Network announced on 12 March that it has launched new high-definition channels with feeds from Showtime Showcase HD, SHO2 HD, The Movie Channel HD and BET HD. The DTH satellite television broadcaster also confirmed additional HD channels will be added to its line-up this spring.

BET, Comedy Central, CMT, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike TV and VH-1 will join the other 128 HD channels broadcast by DISH Network when they launch later this year. The pay-TV company said that the new channels are a response to subscriber requests for more HD channels.

The company did not disclosed any details of the deals to broadcast the channels. DISH Network subscription details and coverage details are available via the company’s website.

Researchers at the University of Miami and at the Universities of Tokyo and Tohoku, Japan, have been able to prove the existence of a “spin battery,” a battery that is “charged” by applying a large magnetic field to nano-magnets in a device called a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ).

The new technology is a step towards the creation of computer hard drives with no moving parts, which would be much faster, less expensive and use less energy than current ones. In the future, the new battery could be developed to power cars.

The study is published in the journal Nature.

The device created by University of Miami Physicist Stewart E. Barnes, of the College of Arts and Sciences and his collaborators can store energy in magnets rather than through chemical reactions. Like a winding up toy car, the spin battery is “wound up” by applying a large magnetic field — no chemistry involved. The device is potentially better than anything found so far, said Barnes.

“We had anticipated the effect, but the device produced a voltage over a hundred times too big and for tens of minutes, rather than for milliseconds as we had expected,” Barnes said. “That this was counterintuitive is what lead to our theoretical understanding of what was really going on.”

The secret behind this technology is the use of nano-magnets to induce an electromotive force. It uses the same principles as those in a conventional battery, except in a more direct fashion. The energy stored in a battery, be it in an iPod or an electric car, is in the form of chemical energy. When something is turned “on” there is a chemical reaction which occurs and produces an electric current. The new technology converts the magnetic energy directly into electrical energy, without a chemical reaction. The electrical current made in this process is called a spin polarized current and finds use in a new technology called “spintronics.”

The new discovery advances our understanding of the way magnets work and its immediate application is to use the MTJs as electronic elements which work in different ways to conventional transistors. Although the actual device has a diameter about that of a human hair and cannot even light up an LED (light-emitting diode–a light source used as electronic component), the energy that might be stored in this way could potentially run a car for miles. The possibilities are endless, Barnes said.

“There are magnets hidden away in many things, for example there are several in a mobile telephone, many in a car, and they are what keeps your refrigerator closed,” he said. “There are so many that even a small change in the way we understand of how they work, and which might lead to only a very small improvement in future machines, has a significant financial and energetic impact.”

Testifying before a congressional subcommittee on Tuesday, senior executives of DirecTV Group Inc and DISH Network Corp said that proper incentives would make satellite television companies willing to extend local service to underserved and rural areas.

Lawmakers are debating whether to renew a law that gives the two national satellite television companies the right to carry and retransmit broadcast television content.

Some in Congress say any renewed law should require companies to provide local service in all of the nation’s 210 designated market areas.

Rick Boucher, who chairs the House communications and technology subcommittee, said rural residents in about 30 markets cannot currently receive local news and weather programming via satellite subscriptions.

Charles Ergen, CEO of DISH Network, said his company is willing to provide the local programming if it receives assistance in funding the technical fixes needed for retransmission.

Ergen said that local TV stations should be required to allow the retransmission at no cost, or for a fixed royalty rate. And stations without truly local content, a number Ergen estimated at 15 to 20 percent, should be excluded from retransmission requirements, he added.

“We would love to be able to do it with the right incentives,” Ergen said.

However some stations have been increasing their rates, according to DirecTV Senior Vice President Bob Gabrielli.

“Broadcasters now routinely demand fees three times those previously paid. And it does not appear that this additional money is being used to provide more or better local programming,” he told the subcommittee.

“Many broadcasters are producing less and less local news.”

Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI) expressed frustration with the firms, saying residents of his hometown of Marquette did not have access to local content such as school closings, despite pledges that the situation would be resolved.

“All these promises that we get from these guys, but you never seem to fulfill it,” said Stupak, who has introduced a bill requiring satellite TV companies to carry local broadcasting in all markets.

Boucher said the law being considered for renewal was established to help satellite television companies compete against cable network operators and to give consumers more programming alternatives.

Dish Network begins transition to new security encryption method known as nagravision 3 today.
The next generation in Dish Networks satellite security,Nagravision 3(N3) has been reportedly implemented.Dish Network has been using two security methods,n2 and n3 during the transition,so as to allow their subscribers who have not yet received their new smart cards,to be able to continue viewing uninterrupted.Once the smart cards have been sent,it was only a matter of time before Dish Network would stop using the old encryption nagravision 2.Thus leaving only the new encryption protocol, nagravision 3 active.Dish Network will slowly stop using nagravision 2 in sections according to Charlie (CEO of Dish Network). They have reportedly begun with internationals.

Channels reported down with use of 3rd party software in fta receivers, are as follows:

Geo News 902
GeoTV 620
Ary Digital 621
QTV 662
Aag TV 903
Indus Vision
The Musik
Indus Music
Ary One World 651
Ary
Ptv
Indus
(along with some others)

In hopes to Thwart off satellite piracy,Dish Networks introduction to nagravision 3 has begun.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The Senate approved a bill Monday that would delay the transition to all-digital television transmissions in the U.S. until June, according to media reports.
Barring congressional action, all TV stations are required by law to stop broadcasting in analog format by Feb. 17.
However, there has been mounting criticism of the digital TV transition, alongside concern that those who stand to lose their TV signals due to the move won’t be properly compensated in time to acquire the necessary converter boxes.
Without such boxes, people will be required to subscribe to satellite or cable TV service.
President Obama has also weighed in on the digital TV transition, calling for it to be delayed.
Similar legislation on the digital TV transition date is expected to receive a vote in the House Energy and Commerce Committee later this week, according to a report in the online edition of The Wall Street Journal.
That legislation would extend the transition date to September, according to the report.
